Developing educational tools and resources to improve living donor care

Every year, over 500 healthy individuals donate an organ to a patient with organ failure, most are living kidney donors (LKDs). In our prior work, we noted the lack of a solid infrastructure to support LKDs long-term and that their care is generally deferred to family
doctors. We then conducted a study to obtain LKD perspective where they identified the need to improve the knowledge and comfort of family doctors as a priority. Thus, we now want to conduct a survey to determine the attitudes, knowledge, and comfort of family doctors on living kidney donation. Following this, we want to identify and develop the educational tools and resources for family doctors and other primary care practitioners that support the development of knowledge and expertise in living kidney donation. Our overarching goal is to improve the care of living kidney donors and increase living kidney donation. Our end-of-grant goal is to develop educational tools or resources that will facilitate the follow up and improve the long-term care of all living donors.
