Canadian Blood Services mourns the passing of Jim Flaherty, a loyal and dedicated supporter of Canada's blood system

April 11, 2014 (OTTAWA) – Today we honour a caring community supporter and a great Canadian, and extend our deepest condolences to his family.

Like so many others, Canadian Blood Services mourns the sudden passing of former Finance Minister Jim Flaherty.

Among his many important accomplishments was his contribution to and long-term support of the blood system, particularly in the Ontario communities of Whitby and Oshawa.

A wonderful advocate and spokesperson for blood donation, Mr. Flaherty sponsored many blood donor clinics in his riding over the past two decades, directly benefiting thousands of hospital patients in need of life-saving treatments.

His last clinic was held just after the ice storm in the greater Toronto area this past winter. Despite the weather, he attended and extended a warm, caring hand to all who were there.

We appreciate so much Mr. Flaherty’s dedicated support and his example to fellow citizens.
